Chapter Ten

“Agent Parker,” he said into his phone.

“Hi, Zach.”

His entire body clenched at the sound of Chandra’s husky voice. His lips curled into a smile. “Hey, sweetheart. How’s sunny California treating you?”

“Pretty good,” she said.

He frowned. There was something in her voice. Something that put his body on edge. It was Thursday, three days since he’d seen her. They’d sent a few texts, teasing, and basically just chit-chat, but this was different. “What’s wrong?”

“Any chance I could talk you into coming back out this way for a couple of days? If, of course, your schedule permits it.”

A quick glance at his calendar showed he could cut out early Friday, fly back Sunday night, and still make the meeting at nine in the morning on Monday with ease. “Absolutely. I can head out after lunch tomorrow if that works for you. Stay the weekend and then catch the red-eye back Sunday night. I have a meeting first thing Monday, otherwise I’d stay longer.”

“That sounds perfect.”

“Chandra, what’s going on, sweetheart?” He was really starting to worry now.

A moment of silence had his tension winding tighter. “I made a decision. About us. I want to go all in, Zach. But that means you deserve to know absolutely everything I can tell you about my past so you can make an informed choice. I still won’t be able to tell you all of it, but I trust you to give you enough that you know what you’re potentially getting into. If you’re interested that is.”

The hesitancy in her voice had his gut clenching with the need to wrap her in his arms. “Damn straight I’m interested, sweetheart. I will see you Friday evening. Why don’t I call you when I land so you can get yourself all gussied up, and I’ll take you out for dinner? We can talk Saturday about everything, but Friday’s for us.”

“Okay, I like the sound of that.” Her voice sounded relieved, and happier.

“I’ll shoot you a text as soon as I have my flights arranged. Pick a place for dinner, and make reservations for an hour after my scheduled time of arrival.”

Her soft laugh made him smile. “Given when you might be arriving, I’ll make it two hours after. You might be fighting rush hour traffic, babe. Which means you aren’t going anywhere fast.”

“True enough. Talk to you soon, Chandra.”

“Be good, Zachary.”

Grinning, he hung up the phone. She was one of a kind his Chandra, and he loved everything about her.

Stepping out of the doors from the secured area of the San Francisco International Airport, Zach headed straight for the rental car desk. A serious plus to flying all the time was that he knew how to get anything and everything into a single carry-on bag. That and working for the government kept him up to date on what was and wasn’t permitted in said bags.

Keys in hand, he exited the chaotic terminal to make his way to the car lot. With a grin on his face, he pulled out his cell to call Chandra.
